This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
At our school we have students with many types of backgrounds. They are first and second generation Latinx, they are African American, Asian, and Caucasian. They have lived in Fresno for generations, or only for a few years. They have an extended family living with them, two parents, a single parent, or sometimes they are unfortunately not able to be with their parents and they are in a foster home or with a relative.
I want my students see themselves reflected in our classroom library.
Both in how the characters in books look, but also in their family situations, where they live, their family traditions and heritage, and even their strengths and weaknesses.
Hopefully making my library more reflective of my students will make them feel that however they are, that’s okay. I want my students to feel safe and seen when they are with me.
My Project
My students will be able to access these books in two ways: through checking out books to read, and also through daily read-alouds. When students pick books to read they will mostly be looking at pictures earlier in the year, later on they will be truly reading. Either way books that reflect them are a great idea!
Our read aloud books will expose students to books with people who are different then them, as well as some that are the same as them.
This will help them learn empathy and about other cultures, as well as feeling proud when they learn more about their own culture.
