My Students
My students are a lovable set of kids who enjoy life! Many come from difficult situations and a tough neighborhood where there are a lot of factors pulling them in every direction to do the wrong thing.
When they come to school, it is often difficult for them to switch into learning mode without the right tools and materials.
As a school, we hope to help our students by giving them an excellent foundation for their education. My students hold high hopes for their futures, and I hope to equip them to hold themselves to high expectations for their life.
My Project
This year, one of my focus areas is promoting and fostering a love of reading for ALL of my students. Reading is such a critical foundation for students, but many can be held back for so many reasons - many of which can be overcome when students are introduced to rich, authentic texts where they can see themselves and relate to the story. As a teacher in an urban setting, many of the "classic" texts in literature books don't do my students justice and fall flat when trying to interest them in the learning.
Empowering students through stories they can identify with is the goal of this project.
Each book in the cart was specifically selected because it has a main character who represents the students that I serve. This reflection of their self in looks or circumstances has the goal of helping students fall in love with reading on a deep level. The sticky notes are requested to help students have authentic reactions to their texts by writing reflections, questions, or notes that they have about the book and to also help them recommend the book to their peers.
