Help me give my students reeds, instrument stands, drumsticks, mouthpieces, office supplies, and many other items to keep our music department running smoothly.
Our school is a public, four-year high school with a wide range of students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Approximately thirty-five to forty percent of our student body participates in fine arts on some level. Offering our music students the chance to succeed is my top priority. We strive daily to make opportunities available for our high school students to further their musical skills and expand their horizons.
Students attending our school have earned recognition at the district, state, regional, and national levels.
We have alumni working on Broadway, teaching college and public school music, and performing as professionals all over the world. Our music department has a one hundred year history of excellence, and we try everyday to live up to that legacy. We offer jazz band, two levels of string orchestra, and concert band, pep band, and marching band. We also have strong choral, guitar, drama, and fine arts programs.
My Project
When we are in a band or orchestra rehearsal and a students breaks a reed or a string, we can handle it one of two ways. Ask the student to sit out for the remainder of the day or until they can get a replacement. I can also walk into my office and get them the item they require to continue making music with the rest of the ensemble.
This is about more than convenience; it is about keeping the spirit of music alive.
When we have the ability to keep a student playing rather than sitting, it is that much easier to forge ahead with our rehearsals. Losing valuable time to a broken or missing part of an instrument is a seemingly easy fix, but only if the items are on hand.
