My Students

What to read?! OH MY... We currently do not have book sets to carry out independent and guided reading. My students are starving for knowledge. When I enter their class room their little faces light up and can't wait to learn about science! I need your help with a project that will go a long way.

My students are a very diverse group of learners, I service general education, below level readers, gifted students, special education students, and English language learners ranging from grades 2nd SPED to the 5th grade and they all love learn about science.

Thier little faces light up as soon as I step into their class. Their area of weakness is in comprehending informational text, and we are in great need of short content books. Our school body is 100% free lunch, and our community is considered to be a food desert. Yes, there is only one corner store and it does not offer the most wholesome nutritional options. It is a great priority of our school to serve the whole child, this means teaching content to be meaningful in their everyday life. We recently acquired an onsite garden which they love to use for learning about plant life and nutrition as well as harvesting vegetables. Their library is a mile away and they need books so they can get the reading aspect.

My Project

The learning our students receive from the garden would be so much more beneficial if I had the literature which connects to their learning garden. I am requesting multiple copies of each title and this is why. I can take them out doors with these requested books and have them reading while observing life, and nutrition in their garden. The books are similar in genre but at varied levels. The plan is to put them into small groups of 4 or 5. They read together without that experience they find scary, having to read aloud in front of 29 others! Now with 5 groups of 5, I one by one visit my kids by group to work with them more closely rather than students seemingly lost in a crowd. The materials help make a project possible that will serve many students cross-curricular. They would be used in several classes were I teach students science, directly to what they need to know about right now, health, nutrition, literacy and of coarse the classic science topics we all grew up learning.

It has been said it takes a village to raise a child.

I see hope for the future of America in young students. These materials will provide daily reading instruction for students in science. Science relates to all aspects of the everyday world, and reading is most necessary for both academic success and in developing life skills. Lets work together to ensure a bright future for the next generation by supporting their reading development right now!
