I am a second grade classroom teacher for 29 wonderful students in the Bronx. We had a pretty good selection of books in the beginning of the year, as I bought many books for the classroom library. However, at this point in the year our library doesn't have such a variety and the books that are there have been read by my students many times.
Our library is very important in our class as we have independent reading time everyday. Unfortunately, my class doesn't get to go to the school library at all during the week. Not many parents take their children to the library, so I allow students to take books home. Many books never return, but I have seen much progress in my students reading levels. Many students truly have become lovers of literature. This is priceless and so the loss of many of my books was well worth it. To see them take a book spontaneously when they go to recess is very rewarding.
I would like my next-year students to have a wide selection of books for their classroom library when they arrive in September.
Thank you for considering this proposal!
