Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach in an urban magnet school where 100% of our students receive free lunch. The past couple of years has brought a major shift in the platforms our students use to learn. We went from having little to no technology in the classroom to being a 1:1 school. Although this has been great, it has created a new set of challenges including broken and cracked screens. A high school is a dangerous place for a laptop in a backpack. Although students try to be careful, laptops get knocked off desks and backpacks get dropped or kicked.
There is a combined hush when this occurs and a collective gasp as students hold their breaths opening up the laptop hoping the screen is intact.
If it is broken the students are out of luck usually for the remainder of their high school careers. Due to circumstances oftentimes beyond their control, students are forced to work with faulty equipment because the school has no extra computers or replacement screens. Purchasing 5 replacement screens would help alleviate this issue for a few of my students with the worst screens.
