it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our high school band is reestablishing itself after a couple of decades of being dormant. In our first year, we were able to attract over 80 students to the band. However we had to turn students away as we don't have enough instruments. We are in need of instruments to keep growing!
My students are from a large urban area and live south of our city.
They represent a high minority and low socioeconomic population. Our school has been under transformation for the past six years and has shown incredible gains in student performance. Now that the school is safer and has dedicated itself to teaching and learning again, the school has decided to begin to reestablish some of the main cultural parts of our school, which include the band. At one time, the band was a leading symbol of the school and the pride of our community.
My Project
A band program needs to have a drum set in order for the percussion students to perform jazz and popular music styles. This type of music allows the band program to serve more students (outside of concert and marching band) and provides music instruction to all interested. This drum set would be used for concert band, marching band, jazz band, many Latino musical groups, the popular music classes, and for after school initiatives for songwriting and performance skills.
Having this drum set will allow my music and band students to explore popular music and jazz performance which were the staples of our former program.
The drum set will also allow us to begin our pep band and support our many sports teams on campus. Our current drum set, from the 1960's, is not capable of being repaired or used.
This drum set will allow students to be able to express themselves using music and perform for the school and community.
