Renaissance Academy Young Astronauts

My Students

Many of our students are behind one to two grade levels because of Covid in math. Some need extra motivation to relearn how to study. Our Young Astronaut program provides that extra motivation to excel in math, science and the humanities. It is amazing at the progress we've seen. Please help.

My Project

Imagine a school with a fully functional Starship Simulator! We have one and use it to motivate students to excel in math, science, leadership, debate and public speaking. I'm the founder of the Christa McAuliffe Space Center in the Alpine School District. Today I teach 6th grade at Renaissance Academy and direct the school's Young Astronaut program. We have 170 students in the program in grade 3 - 9. Students are Starfleet officers and go on simulated space missions where the fun of science fiction is used to motivate them to excel in the subjects mentioned above. Part of that program is our ranking system where students earn points for their math and science grades and improvement. Their points translate into our ranks. The ID card printer is the tool we've needed to add that extra something. With the printer students will earn a rank and receive a Starfleet ID and rank card to carry with them to be used in their classrooms and in the Young Astronauts for officer benefits.
