Our school is in a diverse community of immigrants from all over the world! As a teacher in a low-income neighborhood, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households, and/or with parents who are not fluent in English, and receive a free lunch based on their economic status. These things may prevent them from using materials and gaining the life experiences many of us would think were typical or easily available for learning. Although I cannot control what is available to them at home, I commit myself to exposing them and engaging them in as many experiences as possible to help enrich their lives for a well-rounded future!
My Project
There is an extraordinary group of first graders in the Bronx who I have the fortune of teaching this year, remotely!! They have been working so hard on mastering all of their academic skills however, we continue to run into a few challenges. One of our biggest challenges is being able to share visuals that are not on the computer/internet. Our students work from workbooks, and we have still managed to do many art and other hands on projects with them! These types of activities require modeling for the students to ensure that they have visual examples. This item will also help project books for read aloud and any other material that I would like to share face to face, and would allow me to give my students as close to an in school experience as possible!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
