This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My scholars are persistent, determined souls that desperately want to succeed in life. The school library media center was their connection and go-to spot to make sense of the pressure of academics, cliches, and the stress of their environment and home lives. This distance learning project will help foster a routine and a strong sense of connection to the library. Scholars will get the chance to be creative and learn at the same time. They will be able to participate in a virtual library world. Presently, all children are not in school as the district has been closed since March.
Kids are learning from home and many are in small apartments, public housing and have very limited space with multiple family members.
Currently, they only have paper and pencil as resources. The requested supplies will enable them to continue library makerspace activities.
My Project
While being confined to small spaces, children become quickly bored if they do not have activities and stimulating things to do. Makerspace supplies will enable them to be creative, make tangible projects, and explore something new and fun. Having access to resources will make quarantine seem like the school of innovation. The paint, mica color, cupcake molds, and sewing supplies will allow scholars to be creative while sheltering in. The heat tools will finalize their mica and silicone art. They can create with paper, fabric, soap, etc. The plastic door will ensure mess like paint and silicone stays out of the living quarters. The laser will allow fitness tag and the pet cats will provide social-emotional support for the kids who do not have pets. The lamps will provide better lighting and the dial will be used as a mouse.
These resources will foster social-emotional learning during this pandemic.
Many of my scholars are depressed and disturbed at being confined indoors. In an urban area that has experienced the highest number of deaths in the country, many of the kids have not been outdoors in five weeks. The supplies will foster creativity and allow them to learn and practice academic enrichment like painting, sewing, and rapid movement.
