My Project
As we wind down the school year, we are looking to read one final novel that will help our students to reflect on ideas that are important to them as they navigate the difficulties of growing up in a world that is rapidly changing.
Ibi Zoboi's novel "Pride" takes the class Jane Austen novel and updates for 21st century students, all without losing the themes and dynamic relationships that were so impactful in the original.
"Pride" explores the struggles of separating real love from toxic relationships, and the role that our own actions play in helping us to truly love ourselves. Set against the backdrop of a gentrifying Bushwick, Brooklyn, the issues of class and wealth interplay with the characters as they fall in an out of love.
We will use this novel to not only explore themes of social justice but to have thoughtful conversations about how we treat others and how we deserve to be treated.
