Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the last two years my second grade class in the South Bronx has received a year's worth of Weekly Reader magazines. The first year I paid for it myself and last year a generous DonorsChoose sponsored my students to this valuable publication. If you are not familiar with the Weekly Reader, which you may perhaps remember from your own childhood, let me fill you in on the many ways it has proved valuable to my students:
1. It is written on grade level so it easy for most kids to read and/or follow along.
2. It is engaging. The subject matter is timely and the photos and illustrations grab the attention of young readers.
3. The kids get to keep it. Most of my students do not have a lot and they actually get very excited at the prospect of getting to keep even a simple four page magazine.
4. It provides a special focus on social studies and science, two areas that tend to get short shrift in the current educational climate with it's heavy focus on reading and math programs.
5. It comes with a number of interesting educational supplements including appropriate third grade test prep materials. (I am moving up to third grade with my class. Third grade in New York State is a testing year so these materials are particularly important.)
As a teacher I often and willingly spend my own money on my kids but my resources are limited. It would be a great to be able to order another year of Weekly Reader for my class. A class set of Weekly Reader and the Science Spin supplement (a monthly magazine devoted specifically to science) would benefit my entire class for the whole year. Thank you for your consideration.
