Reluctant Readers No More

My students need new books and magazines to read. We are starting a new book club and need materials to read.

My Students

Every year it seems I have more and more students who "hate" to read. My goal is to take that "hate" and turn it into a "love" of reading. It is not easy to compete with cell phones and tablets but I feel like a great book can show students that reading is exciting, too!

My students are 7th grade students in a small public school system.

Our students are from urban, rural, and suburban areas. We have inclusive classrooms where mixed ability readers come together to learn. About 40 % of our population lives in poverty. These students don't often get to go buy books in the book store or at our school book fair. A new book is an exciting and rare thing for these students to have.

My Project

I would like to offer these books and magazines to our most reluctant readers first. In my classroom, students run our library. We have many great books from former Donor's Choose projects that have helped many past students develop a love of reading. I choose titles loved by other students and past non-readers. Next school year, I would like to develop a book club or group to entice struggling readers to try some new titles or genres. I know that this awesome selection of books will be sure to interest those students.

Your donation will help put some of the most exciting teen books into my students' hands.

Some of these students never get to select and read a new book. These books will appeal to student interests like action and sports. I know that students will put away their cell phones for a time and read the new books purchased for this exciting project! Thank you for helping students begin to develop the lifetime habit of reading.
