Reluctant Readers Need Riveting Resources

My students need books such as Cinder, Mockingjay and the Bluford series in order to be turned on to the joy of reading.

My Students

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies [...] The man who never reads lives only one. I believe this. And my students come each fall unaware of the lives they are missing out on. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to reveal these opportunities to them. I can only do so by giving them riveting resources.

I teach in an urban middle school.

Because of its location, I call our school a 2-in-1 model. We have only two Language Arts "tracks." The Honors level kids come from the homes of doctors, professors, writers, and lawyers. Their homes are filled with support, expectations, love, and books. Lots of books. I teach on the other side of the "tracks." My students don't have the same level of support, expectation, or love of books. Some of them don't have both parents at home. Many of them don't have either. What my students do have is a yearning. They have an appetite. They are eager to consume and devour. I can serve them with a rich diet but taste is key at this stage. They need to sample and develop a palette for fine writing. And in seventh grade, I start the year with appetizers, like the titles I am requesting.

My Project

My students need to be turned on to the joy of reading. Almost are are struggling to read at grade level and these books will excite and grip them. We participate in daily sustained silent reading. This is an opportunity for students to have choice over their reading material and assignments. This allows me to conference with them individually on their reading growth, to give opportunities to hunt for examples of literary devices we are studying (figurative language, for example), and to expand vocabulary. They learn to advocate for themselves/books, share what they like and don't like in a productive manner, review plot elements and make questions for themselves. By the end of the year, literature circles are much more influential and students are able to be much more independent learners because they have been given control over their studies in a way that is seldom done at this age level and in other courses which have become so standards-driven.

Again, a reader lives a thousand lives before he dies.

The man who never reads lives only one. My students become much more engaged in the literature we do study together and have more points of comparison/contrast when reading independently. They begin to share their books, presenting them to the class in book talks and together develop a culture of readers, something every class learn in order to grow together.
