Help me give my students the reading material they need for our Dystopian Reading Unit. These books introduce reluctant readers to an action-packed genre that entices them to read multiple books in a series.

My Project
The dystopian novel is strange, fast-paced, and other-worldly! Kids love it and even reluctant readers are seduced by its action-packed charms. Think of all the YA dystopian novels that are now blockbuster movie series (The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner). As a 7th and 8th grade ELA teacher, I believe this genre is so important because it is particularly relevant to this age group, who inhabit a precarious position between childhood and adulthood. Students at this age often feel a sense of powerlessness in their lives, much like the characters they are connecting with. A tendency towards rebellion and the questioning of norms melds seamlessly with their developmental stage of life, as they push boundaries and forge new identities. Because of the relevance in their lives, dystopian novels inspire great whole-class and book club discussions and students develop an authentic love for reading this genre, even the non-readers.
With these new books, students can choose from a wide variety of dystopian titles on their reading level, and they will also provide the second book in the series to encourage kids to continue reading once they are hooked.
Having a choice is so relevant in the classroom and it is particularly important when cultivating a love for reading in your students. Having multiple copies of titles on all reading levels allows students to partner with other classmates and make decisions as a book club. Students are now making their own decisions and guiding their own learning in school. What a revolutionary idea in our broken world...
