I have only one out of forty nine students reading on grade level. The next question is how to we close the achievement gap. Through daily small groups and the reading text daily. The materials requested will be used to help build a library of student interest. In order to engaged students into independent reading. You first need to have text that they are interested in the selection of books are student chosen texts.
The classroom libraries in our middle school have so many outdated and unappealing books.
Graphic novels are the most motivating books for reluctant readers. Our students request new and engaging books all the time. The variety of books we are requesting are classics, sports themed, and mysteries. They are illustrated and re-designed in true comic book style. Graphic novels appeal to visual learners and students who find the task of reading chapter books extremely challenging. They give many of our middle school students, especially the boys, a reason to love reading. Giving English language arts teachers a chance to share graphic novels with our struggling readers is an opportunity not to be missed.
When teachers place high interest, brand new and exciting books in students' hands, the look on their faces is priceless!
