This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Please help me provide the best educational resources for my AP students! I am a committed teacher who has completed the National Board Certification process and I am awaiting my scores. I teach AP Human Geography and World Studies, grades 9-12, in a high-need, urban, College Board/EXCELerator high school in Illinois. 94.8% of my students are low income, and 21% are limited English proficient. Over 20% of my students require instructional accommodations.

My school-provided laptop no longer works properly. Several programs such as Windows media player cause the computer to crash regularly. The battery no longer works, and the cord for the power supply is worn out, causing sparks and power loss if it is touched. The letters on several of the keys have worn off, the latches keeping the computer closed are broken, the body of the CPU is coming apart, and the LCD screen flickers on and off. In short, it is worn out and antiquated.

I need a new laptop capable of handling streaming video and editing/burning video files to DVD. I rely heavily on technology for instruction. I use the computer to expose my students to high quality PBS media such as Frontline, NOVA, and NOW. I also utilize a variety of NPR audio in my instruction. My students conduct oral history interviews for a book on migration, and I need a computer to edit and assemble their work for publishing. My students have limited resources, and they will use the computer to create PowerPoints, download files from the school website, interact with 3D models of the Earth's physical and human systems, explore the Internet links I have posted, and create/burn original video documentaries for History Fair. This will prepare my students for college by exposing them to rigorous, challenging content while allowing them to integrate technology in their problem solving processes and in the presentation of their proposals.

Your help will ensure that my students will have access to the finest quality media that addresses a variety of challenging global problems. I have a problem solving approach to teaching, and students apply their skills to come up with solutions to issues ranging from the Rwandan genocide to agricultural and economic development issues, the preservation of folk cultures, and the relationship between population growth and environmental degradation. This computer will help my students prepare for college by exposing them to rigorous curricula, integrating technology into their presentations, and increasing their chances of passing the Advanced Placement exam.
