This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students that come to my classroom are looking for a morning meal and maybe some reading texts that might pique their interest. As you may well know, today's student must be very well versed in a myriad of texts and varied complexities. Storytelling, informational text and technical reads required!

In a recent survey of a cross-section of my class, here are the dream jobs they are thinking about.

Veterinarians because they love dogs. Nascar driver since they enjoy speeding around and going fast. Usual sports like soccer, football, baseball are still a focus by some. Authors, designers, graphic artists with highly creative minds. One student presently has created his own computer game on the Internet. One distinct common element to all of these dreams. We want to help our families reach beyond what we can see just when we walk outside. Sounds trivial? What I have noticed in recent years where I teach is two things. When I ask who has been to the beach or seen snow? Only a few hands go up. Who has heard of this famous person or fairy tale? Again just a few hands. We teach concepts and read required items and test. My students desire to see beyond, expansion of what experiences they can read about is and must be my priority.

My Project

Recently I showed a PowerPoint slide with a quote and photo of Albert Einstein. They all chuckled because of that nose and fluffy hairstyle. You tell them how incredibly smart he was and they are skeptical. Some of the texts I have requested will open their minds to some of the great minds of all time. There are texts of great historians, presidents, military heroes and famous people from the humblest of beginnings. We can create dialog that compares or contrasts what these historical characters went through. Reading these texts can take them back in history where we could see the sequence and reasons why people did what they did. Lastly they just might find that person that reminds them of themselves and will start to believe and be able to see beyond what there circumstances might be shadowing.

It has been said for many years that there is nothing like a good book.

That still holds true. My students can grow with a story book that carries a moral and lesson for life. Science texts I ordered will spark the scientist in my class who could help to solve an energy issue, medical mystery or food shortage. Texts about famous and infamous people just might keep us from repeating history but repelling them toward a powerful future. My students have an academic bar that continues to be raised.
