My Students
My students are curious, compassionate, and creative minds beginning their high school journey. They love reading books which reflect their individual and unique stories, cultures, languages, and communities. They are passionate about the world around them, and work hard to question, challenge, and change social issues they feel strongly about.
I love watching them fall in love with reading.
Currently, in our classroom, we are trying to build an inclusive and culturally sustaining library which reflects the diversity and beauty of the individual cultures represented in our class.
My Project
My students begin class every day with independent reading, as numerous educational studies have proven that it is the best way for young readers to grow. Unfortunately, independent reading has become a challenge, as our class libraries are dated and not at all representative of their identities, cultures, stories, and histories.
All kids deserve to have their story told.
They deserve to have their experiences represented and feel welcomed into the world of reading. These books will support a vision of a culturally relevant environment where my students can feel safe and recognized. A library which includes authors, characters, and stories that reflect the young people reading them is integral to how they understand the world around them, as well as their growth in literacy skills.
