My Students

Just cannot believe it is May already! Only 5 weeks left of school, and teachers are already planning for next year. What will I do different? What really made an impact this year? What do i need to make 2012-13 even better?

No questions here.

Last year, I wrote and received a grant for basic needs, like pencils, pens, and spirals. You see, almost 30% of my students come to school with nothing. And, our school system will not give us anything for them. My first year, I watched students sit there doing nothing because they did not even have a pencil. Well, that grant, received by the first day of school this year changed all that....at least in my 5 classes. Next, all those items that can add up, like white board markers; color coding draws the students attention to the task at hand. And post-its? Post-its are so versatile. I like to use them to help with formulas, exit tickets, interactive activities, and group games. I also need a few manipulatives to help make fractions and decimals make sense.

My Project

I could write all day about the student who were changed simply by pencils, pens, spirals, and the few new techniques and tricks I was able to utilize (without breaking my bank).... OK, my constant reminders, prodding, encouraging (some call it nagging) also helped. One student is A.O., who the entire first quarter smelled like an illegal substance when he arrived at first period 15-20 min. late; now arrives smelling drug free and on time at least 4 days a week. His F has changed to a C, (believe me, that is a miracle). My very right brained, D.G., used the grant materials to get himself organized, quite a challenge for this creative young man. L.G, who is significantly dyslexic, and lives in a 2 bedroom apartment with his parents and 4 siblings, is always appreciative of the materials. The system is simple. The materials are in the lowest file cabinet drawer. If a student needs anything, he simply goes and gets it, no embarrassment associated with it.

So, I am thinking that if it worked so well this year, let's go for it again.

Right? Plus a few more little educational tricks, like some hands on fraction and decimals resources. Post-its are a great opportunity to learn, and the kids love to use them, especially the colored ones. My second year of teaching in a public high school was 100% better than the first. I can only see going even further forward. Thank you!
