This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our Middle Schoolers live in a predominantly Latino and African-American community on the southwest side of Chicago known as West Lawn. Our school includes students in grades 5-8. Most 75+ % receive free or reduced school lunches. Our students and their families were hit hard by the effects of COVID-19. Many of their parents were either essential workers (factories, grocery stores) or worked in hospitality/restaurants and lost their jobs as a result of the COVID lockdowns which caused tremendous stress and fear.

Our students are energetic, curious, and resilient.

Like many students their age, our students are working on developing their identities and trying to figure out who they are and what they stand for. Trying to develop their identities in a world where they feel extreme peer pressure due to being exposed to the unrealistic portrayal of their peers' lives on social media and pressure to meet those unrealistic standards has caused them to experience anxiety, depression, feeling overwhelmed, and diminished self-esteem. Our goal in designing a Relaxation Station is to provide our students with a space to learn how to decompress, manage their feelings, and regroup. The furniture we are asking for will provide our students with a relaxing place to sit in order to decompress; the sensory and fidget toys will help our students stimulate their senses and refocus their energy; the draw and write journal will allow our students a way to express themselves; the posters and sound/diffuser machine will help us provide a relaxing and calming space for all. By providing them with a space that is calming, supportive, and emotionally accommodating, we hope they will build the skills and strength to face the challenges ahead.
