My Students

"Good Morning, class, today we are going to do some breathing and relaxation exercises; however, you cannot lay on the floor because it's not clean. So, just do this from your desk." This is what I have to tell my students when we are attempting to do relaxation exercises as we prepare to perform.

I am the proud drama teacher at a predominantly African-American urban high school in Georgia.

Most of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch and live in Section 8 housing. Many of them are not exposed to many cultural experiences, so showing them to all aspects of theater brings me so much joy. I love watching them come to my class and get involved in the activities that I have planned for them. What's most funny is that many of them were very despondent at the beginning of the year; however, I have watched them grow to LOVE my class and catch them saying that my class is their favorite one. I believe a drama class should be fun and that has been my goal ever since I started teaching there.

My Project

Unfortunately, I have to conduct my drama classes in a trailer and the floors are very unclean. Part of a drama class is being able to participate in relaxation exercises. It's extremely difficult to lay down and relax on a dirty floor. Many high school students are quick to say, I'm not laying on that nasty floor." I would love to have some yoga mats to lay out and when they come in they could relax in a calm and clean environment. As performers, it is important for them to relax and complete breathing exercises, but it's very hard to do that when you are working against difficult obstacles like an unclean floor.

Many of my students face some very difficult situations at school and home.

How awesome would it be for them to come my class and be able to release all of that stress and let go? The very thought of providing them with that window of reprieve would give any teacher true purpose and happiness.
