My Students

KIPP Unite Public School is a school designed to provide a rigorous education based on high expectations and strength of character to afford students in under served communities the ability to lead a life of choice. Many students who attend KIPP are well below the poverty line and tend to live in an environment that is unstructured and not nurturing of social and emotional well being.

Students who reside in under served communities come with great strengths and some times even greater needs.

I aim to meet my students where they are. In order to do this, I am asking for items that will help me fulfill their need to have alternate seating other than their desk.

My Project

I am requesting items for my classroom that will enable me to implement flexible seating. Flexible seating has many benefits including choice, movement, and sensory input. Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD. In addition, students become more invested in learning if they have choice and control of their environment. Finally, alternative seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.
