Relatable Stories that Enhance the Reading Experience
Help me give my students books. This year, each grade level is assigned a novel. As a class, we immerse ourselves in the pages and use the stories to learn reading and writing strategies.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is and always has been a room for personal growth. I currently teach 8 classes, 6 of which are language arts, 4 different grade levels. Their ages range from 14-18. My homeroom classes are our current juniors and seniors in the unit. Besides being the English/LA teacher, I also teach communication skills, community-based instruction, daily living skills, social/emotional skills, art and independent functioning. Everyone in my classroom is a student with Autism Spectrum Disorder. A few have multiple disorders/diagnosis. The setting is a self-contained class, so I see many of the students multiple times of the day. I have had the privilege to work with my students year after year! I have moved along with them and have been able to witness their academic and personal growths.
My Project
By having these class sets of novels, students get to actually hold a book, feel the cover and turn the pages. Ever since the pandemic hit, technology has become even more necessary for our daily function. One thing that has not changed though is the need to hold a book. PDFs and readers are just not the same. Some of the students need to highlight, underline, and point to words and sentences in order to fully understand what they are reading. Accommodations do not always have to be a technological approach. Going back to the basics is never a bad thing.
