My Students

My first-grade class is a place of challenge, discovery, and growth-filled​ with many different opportunities for all students. They are creating a foundation for their future learning and education. My students face the challenges of living in a high poverty area, yet they come to school eager to learn every day.

The students grow and learn in different ways with different supports.

They bring to the class their wonderfully diverse backgrounds and an eagerness to learn English as many of them are ELL students and students with special needs. All of my first-grade​ students have unique needs and talents that help them grow as lifelong learners.

My Project

Sometimes just using a flat number line or 100's chart is not enough to help students understand number concepts to 100. Yet when we are talking about financial and Mathematical literacy this fluency is essential. Yet many students struggle with this, and this can especially be the case for students with special needs who need to count by touching.

These Rekenreks, which are like an old fashioned abacus will help them do just that, touch and count by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s while physically moving beads just as they would with money.

As teachers our students are given the paper they need to write their numbers on, but not the basic tools they need to solve the problems we give them. Paper money is just paper with a number on it, this tool will help students understand numbers represent quantities, a skill necessary for financial literacy. With your help in funding this project my students will have the classroom basics they need to be able to solve math problems related to financial literacy.
