Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
A typical day in our 3rd grade classroom involves lots of hard work, creativity and valuable discussions. Students are solving multiplication and division word problems, writing their own fantasy stories, and studying ancient empires around the world.
My 3rd graders are very dedicated and hard working, and deserve a fully stocked, well maintained classroom with materials that allow them to be their best selves.
Firstly, they need more flexible seating and seating accommodations to show up as completely as they can every day. Wobbly stools and fidget bands for chairs will support my students to be fully comfortable in their bodies and stay focused on learning. By removing the outside distraction of sitting in a hard plastic chair or not being able to control your legs, my students can now dedicate all their energy to their work.
I am also requesting class sets of markers and colored pencils as our current collection is well-loved and in need of some TLC. Most importantly, I want to give my students access to markers and colored pencils in different skin tones to faithfully draw themselves and others. Giving my class the ability to see themselves, their family or their friends drawn with the correct skin color is incredibly powerful for their self esteem and social awareness.
Finally, this project includes growth mindset posters to encourage flexible thinking as well as books that will provide mirrors, windows and doors to my students. This project is an effort to rejuvenate my classroom so we can finish the year strong!
