Students today deal with high expectations, hectic lives, and technological overload. Stressors like these can cause students to deal with anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Reading enables students to enter different worlds, perspectives, and experiences that can help develop sympathy and empathy. Reading books is also a way to help students connect to their peers as they talk about their reactions to the characters and plots.
My goal is to help foster an open and positive learning community by providing students the opportunity to explore a variety of books that appeal to their interests.
Students will have access to the diverse selection of novels, the time provided during class to immerse themselves in the reading, and opportunities to share verbally or non-verbally their thoughts with their peers. The whiteboard will be open for students to share their thoughts or make recommendations with the EXPO markers.
The list of books hopes to represent the diverse students of my classroom as well as novels that are considered high interest. With your help, we can reinvigorate the students' experiences with reading. Thank you.
