My Students
Our student population is very diverse. Seventy-six percent of students belong to ethnic backgrounds that are of minority and many students come from low income families. Our students in our health classes are in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. These students are very open-minded and respectful to each other’s uniqueness. They are willing to try new things, show resiliency on a daily basis, and are able to effectively manage school work, extracurricular activities, and their jobs while keeping positive attitudes.
My Project
Our goal as health teachers is to help our students remain healthy or become healthy. We see one main commonality among most of our students, and that is making unhealthy food choices. Our students usually have at least one 99 minute period off during the school day, which means students have the flexibility to go off campus to eat lunch, study at coffee shops, or to go home. When students arrive back to school after their off periods, we frequently see students bring unhealthy food and drinks to class. Our observation gave us the idea to visit stores where students buy their food in order to find healthier food options, and happily, we were able to find food and drinks that would be similar in taste but had better nutritional value.
This money will be used to buy healthier food and drinks, such as granola type bars, healthy energy drinks, beef jerky and fruit strips, to give to our students during the nutrition unit.
We believe if we introduce students to healthier options that are at their local stores, 7 Eleven and Dollar Tree, students will be more likely to choose them on a regular basis.
