My Students

These rising 5th graders who I had to pleasure of serving most last year are highly motivated visual learners who learn math best when physical object are accessible.

There comes a time when our student fail to learn how we teach, and we must therefore figure out how to teach the way they learn.

These students really enjoy engaging in real-world problem solving and getting out of their seats to manipulate objects, because it better accommodates their visual learning style. However our school lacks such resources that will help them to be more successful.

My Project

My students need volume discovery can activities and a Build & Learn Volume kit. We plan to use these activities to introduce and reinforce the concept of volume. They will come in familiar with working with two dimensional shapes (length and width), but the very first unit will be volume where we introduce a third dimension (height).

This is a challenging concept to transition to, but with the appropriate resources that provide visual, relevant and hands-on activities, we will be equipped to help them to succeed.

These resources will help them to work collaboratively first, then independent so that they may develop and master the necessary skills to prepare for middle school geometry concepts.
