My Project
In the Iredell-Statesville School district, we have created classes for students with High-Functioning Autism. These are kiddos who are on or near grade level academically but have behaviors that hinder them from participating in a whole-group setting. In the past, they have been lumped into classes where the curriculum was far too easy or where they dealt with sensory overload 20+ times a day. These kids finally have an appropriate place where they have the opportunity to grow academically and socially. Recently, we have started a new one of these classrooms so we can reach more kids with these needs.
This new classroom for students with High-Functioning Autism is just getting started and they need help!
We are using individualized behavior systems that offer rewards for completing work. The kids are given play money when they complete a task or show positive behavior. Then, throughout the day, they are be able to purchase preferred items. Things like the Dum Dums, Wrigley's Candy Mix, Snack Packs, Takis, and Jolly Ranchers will be a great reward! We will use the Play-Doh, Light Up Bracelets, and Fidget Toy Set for students to purchase at their weekly trip to the treasure box. As most of these kiddos come from low-income homes, the items mentioned are highly desirable and are the key to success to helping them improve their behavior.
Currently, this class is being served by substitute teachers. The behavioral
technicians in the room are using their own money to provide the supplies the kids need. It is our goal with these classes that they can eventually transition back to the general education classroom. With your support, we will be able to teach them how to cope and give them some much needed love!
