I teach a population that is highly diverse and majority low income. My students are fiercely protective of their friends, family and are socially justice minded individuals who are very attuned to issues of fairness and equality. My students are passionate, funny, beautiful, and thoughtful young humans who represent a variety of experiences.
I believe their education is a powerful tool they can use to change the world, but they face many daily challenges both inside and outside of the classroom.
Sometimes they need support and tools to ensure their path to that education is equitable.
My Project
For any reader, the books they read are essential to sustaining their interest and love of reading. For middle school readers, this is absolutely integral to their reading life. Almost all of my readers are still forming their reading identities - figuring out what genres they love, the authors they can't wait to read and why they read.
These dynamic, new and engaging titles will help them discover what they love and remind them why reading is important and interesting.
These books will be an essential part of our classroom library and a robust classroom library is even more important this year, as some students have not read regularly in over a year. Some of these titles are picture books, which are books we will use to help students see themselves in what they read and practice reading analysis skills. Students will be able to pick up these books and discover new worlds, characters and authors, which is the best way to start off a year of literacy learning!
