This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a public elementary school in the San Fernando Valley. Each of my students is an unique learner with many abilities and some challenges. Every student in my class is on the Autism Spectrum.
My students seek outside input to regulate their sensory needs.
Children with Autism need sensory activities to increase attentiveness, manage strong emotions and reduce the need for repetitive and compulsive behaviors. My students are highly capable, but need assistance balancing an over stimulated or under stimulated nervous system.
My Project
My students will use these materials to activate and balance their vestibular system and take opportunities to relax in a calming environment.
I will use the carpet to help visually identify the sensory library.
My students can rest or read in the Peapods which will provide consistent deep pressure around their bodies. The balance ball and Shape It sand will provide my students with an outlet to express built up energy. I can use the vibrating mitt and sensory brushes when children are working independently to help them stay alert and ready for learning. The sensory songs will help create routines for us to carry outside the classroom into any area that may be overwhelming such as the auditorium or cafeteria.
This will improve my students' academic skills by providing more time on task and less time working through emotional and behavioral needs. It will assist my students in independently selecting materials to help them combat life's daily stressors and challenges. They will learn to express their needs and resolve difficult situations before they escalate into behavioral needs. If my students learn to address their sensory needs as a child, they will be more prepared to lead an independent life as an adult.
