I'm a Varying Exceptionalities (VE) teacher at my high school, but you may understand this better with previously used terminology such as Exceptional Student Education (ESE) or Special Education (SPED). I work with students whose brains throw extra hurdles in the path of their learning process and help them figure out ways to deal with those hurdles when they arise. Every student is different and there is no cookie cutter way to help them solve their problems. But there IS a baseline where we need to start.
Regulation before expectation means that we can't begin to expect our students to perform academically if their mental or emotional health have reached levels beyond their control.
In our office, we help our students deal with regulation first (referring them to our school's amazing team of counselors when needed) and seek to provide a calm environment where they can seek help and learn how they learn in comfort and peace. That's where we need your help.
We'll be painting the walls of our office and have already begun decorating to make the space calmer. We moved into this space last year noticed that the harsh colors in the room and lack of natural light negatively affected our own mental health. We want to cut down on the fluorescent lighting and bring in more sunlight as much as possible while providing a variety of seating options, such as Upholstered Glider and Office Desk Chairs, for our students while they're dealing with whatever is troubling them, whether academic or emotional. The posters will help them regulate and then the manipulatives will help with reading, writing, and algebraic thinking. Regulation and then expectation. Thank you for your help!
