This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In our biology classroom, we do real science. Having parts of a working DNA lab will help make that happen.
Our high school students are recent immigrants to the United States from non-English speaking countries.
They have been in the United States for less than 4 years. Many come with interrupted schooling. They are below the poverty line but have strong dreams.
My Project
The larger goal is to create a working DNA lab. The refrigerator will allow my students to be able to store specimens and temperature sensitive supplies (such as DNA primers). Once complete, the DNA lab will give students the resources to use the latest genetics techniques to preserve specimens, isolate and amplify DNA. Students will then send the samples for sequencing and use genetics informatics to identify their specimens.
Giving students the latest lab equipment allows them to act as scientists.
This builds their knowledge and passion for science. This refrigerator is a first and essential part to creating a fully functioning DNA lab. What could be cooler than that?
