My students need a mini refrigerator to store our ingredients and keep them in a location closest to our cooking area.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Romano's classroom raised $220
This project is fully funded
My Students
I teach students in grades 3-5 who are diagnosed with Autism, in a regional autistic support, self-contained classroom. I teach in a Title 1 School with a high percentage of students who are from low-income families.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a pervasive early developmental disorder where individuals may have problems with social behaviors, verbal and non-verbal communication, repetitive behaviors (verbal and physical), and obsessive interests.
Although my students are diagnosed with autism, they do not let autism define who they are.
My Project
In addition to academic skills like reading and math, I teach social skills, positive behavior, self-advocacy, and life skills such as cooking. Practical skills learned during cooking include measuring, cutting, pouring, reading, following a recipe, knowledge of kitchen safety, understanding cooking vocabulary, and identifying and using cooking tools appropriately, are all necessary for independent living. During cooking, students also learn about nutrition, selecting healthy food, planning, patience, and working with others. Through cooking, students have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning, apply new information, and demonstrate their skills.
Cooking lessons can address skills in the areas of communication, fine motor, problem solving, and math; and tailors instruction for diverse learners through multi-sensory activities.
Through grants and donations, I've acquired a microwave, convection oven, and full mobile cooking cart, however we still need a refrigerator.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
