My Students

"Let the children be their own composers". This quote by Carl Orff, the man who developed the Orff-Schulwerk method of music education, reflects the music-making in my classroom.

My 400 students are creative and energetic.

They love to come to music class to sing, play instruments, move and create. Each student in our school gets a chance to perform publicly at least once during each school year. There are music groups such as choir and drum ensemble that meet outside the school day and perform for our students and community. The music program is a strong and integral part of our school community. Many of our students go on to middle and high school programs and become successful musicians and leaders.

My Project

Every student in our school will use the requested new wood blocks, sand blocks, guiros and an ocean drum daily. Preschool and kindergarten students will use the instruments to keep a steady beat and play simple rhythmic patterns. First through fifth grade students will use the instruments when practicing and performing multi-layer instrumental pieces, when reading and creating rhythmic patterns in our classroom centers, when creating music to accompany story-telling, and in school and community performances. They will learn to read and perform simple to complex rhythm patterns both alone and with others. They can only do these things with instruments that work!

Donations to this project will dramatically improve my classroom in many ways.

Right now we have to make do with instruments that are broken and worn out, and the sound these instruments make is low quality. This frustrates the students. New instruments with crisp, clear even tone will be pleasing to our ears. Our music making will much more enjoyable! Instruments that work will heighten my students' love and enjoyment of music.
