Reflective Readers Need Novels!

My students need novels including Holes, The Janitor's Boy, and The Great Gilly Hopkins to learn to read more complex text during whole and small group instruction.

My Students

Do you remember the first book that sparked your passion for reading? These novel sets will allow my students to engage in complex text through the C.I.A. approach, which is aligned with Common Core Standards. I am driven to ignite this love of reading in my students through authentic text!

Our students live in a diverse community and attend a neighborhood school.

This has allowed our students to develop many long-lasting relationships. We are a supportive community of learners and leaders who look for ways to become better citizens every day! I am fortunate to team teach, which gives me the opportunity to teach to my strength - literacy! My two classes of fifth graders are energetic, inquisitive, and curious about their world. They love working collaboratively in all settings, and show a true desire to become better readers and writers together. We have worked to establish a respectful environment where all learners can succeed!

My Project

We will use the C.I.A. (Collect, Interpret, Apply) approach when reading these novels. The C.I.A. approach is aligned to the Common Core Standards in ELA and guides students through comprehending complex text. Throughout daily lessons, students will collect critical information, interpret the text, and apply these skills to their lives. These novels will give all students an opportunity to learn and apply critical thinking skills in reading. Holes will be read during whole group instruction. During lessons, students use colored flags to mark important plots throughout the book, keep reader's notebooks to record thoughts while reading, and build their vocabulary knowledge as they expand their comprehension. In addition to whole group instruction, students will read differentiated books in a book club setting to guide students in transferring the strategies they have learned.

I truly believe that these book sets will help both of my fifth grade classes to become excited about reading!

My students will have the abilities of expert readers and will leave for middle school with a toolbox of reading skills they will use for the rest of their lives!
