Refining Fine Motor Skills for TK Students

My students need mats, wood pieces and tag bags for fine motor practice to prepare for writing. The Handwriting Without Tears program has been very successful, including new books.

My Students

Do you remember learning to write? My Transitional Kindergarten students and kindergarten students practice fine motor skills everyday. One of their favorite activities is building "Mat Man." They love hearing stories about Mat Man too. The lines and curves are great for letter practice too.

My students are Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students.

This is their first school experience and they are developing lots of skills including social skills, fine motor skills and Common Core Standards age appropriate skills. At this age, children learn best with hands on experiences that involve multi sensory experiences and the Handwriting Without Tears wood pieces provide lots of movement opportunities. We build letters and tap the big lines to practice listening skills and of course the children's favorite activity is to "build" Mat Man. The blue mats will provide a workspace for building Mat Man and alphabet letters.

My Project

My students are just learning how to hold crayons and pencils correctly. They are learning to write letters starting at the top and how to form letters. These are life-long skills that are an important foundation for printing and eventually cursive writing. Everyday we sing songs from the Get Ready for School CD and use the wood pieces to make letters. With the addition of more wood pieces, all of the children will be able to participate at the same time. Listening to the Mat Man stories inspires the children and they just love Mat Man. The new books will expand their experience and include opposites, and social studies skills.

By bringing new, exciting materials into the classroom, the children get excited and engaged in learning.

Fine motor skills are foundational skills for my young students and have an impact on not only school success, but on positive self esteem.
