Refilling the Personal Care Drawer

My Project

Middle school is a time of great change in academic expectations, brain development, interpersonal relations, self image, and physical maturity. If a student's hygiene needs are not being met or things happen unexpectedly, their self esteem will tank, and regardless if peers say something hurtful, they will be stressed out and unable to participate freely or learn effectively.

I could use a little help in restocking personal care drawers with deodorant, feminine products, toothpaste, and washcloths.

We also need trusty Kleenex in the classroom for colds, allergies, bloody noses, and occasional tears. A colleague and I found that keeping a few drawers of personal care products in the science storeroom between our classrooms works very well. Students know that they can quietly tell us they need something, go to the drawers to take what they need, go fix themselves up, then return to the classroom feeling more calm and confident. The shy smiles, afterschool thank you visits, and notes make it clear that they appreciate the personal products and that we care about them.
