My students need to be able to use graphing calculators! As a department, we are purchasing rechargeable batteries so that we can keep our 20 new calculators up and running.

My Students
Reenergize our calculators...and our classroom!
Our students DO mathematics in the classroom. To us, that means solving real problems and explaining the thinking behind strategies to each other. Real problems require real supplies.
JBS is a transfer high school.
This means that we accept students who for a variety of reasons were not successful in their previous high school. Many of our students have taken the same math class a few times...and failed. Students feel unsuccessful at math and unsure of themselves in sharing answers. In our classrooms, students are encouraged to think creatively. Strategies, as opposed to answer-getting, are encouraged. Students have a voice as we design curriculum that meets their math needs and is relevant.
My Project
Students need calculators to solve problems with real data. In one class, students will be modeling data about fare prices in the New York City subway. Another class will use the calculators to create functions that represent their own catapults. Our last class will be using the calculators to calculate the chances of winning the lottery.
Students in all classes will be using the 20 calculators to support low numeracy skills in learning high school level mathematics. We teach numeracy skills directly, but we also provide students with the tools necessary to be successful in higher order thinking.
All students will gain calculator skills and have access to higher order thinking that is required for mathematics.
In many cases, our students cannot afford their own calculators.
Students have the right to have the appropriate supplies to learn. By giving students the supplies they need, one obstacle between my students and graduation is eliminated.
