My Students

I work with students in grades kindergarten through third grade who have special needs and who require a self-contained setting in order to reach their fullest potential.

My students vary in their individual needs, but all have the same desire to succeed and achieve to their fullest potential.

They are reading below grade level, and struggle with writing and many other basic skills. They are very visual, concrete, literal thinkers. As a result of this type thinking, they would greatly benefit from a weekly magazine comprised of vibrant photography,real-life interests and factual information that will whet their appetite for reading. My school is located in the Upstate of South Carolina in a rural community. It is a Title 1 school that serves students K4-6th grade.

My Project

Who can forget that first fish reeled in as a child? From then on, you were hooked into a new past-time,eager to get a bigger and better fish on each subsequent trip!

My goal in submitting a grant request is to create that same desire for reading in my special needs classroom.

My hopes are to reel them in to reading books on topics that are most meaningful to them. Once I get them hooked, think of how they can be more self-sufficient in their world and how their interest will spark to dive into all other genres of books! My favorite author sums it up best: The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. Dr. Seuss

Currently, my classroom library is bursting at the seams with fictional books. This has only allowed my children to read what I thought they may like best. I do have some informational texts but have come to realize the importance of exposing to and instructing my students how to read and comprehend this genre.Success in our world depends on our ability to read and comprehend these type texts. By providing a weekly magazine, I will be able to increase exposure to my children of real-life reading about their world and whet their appetite for further exploration of their world!

Because my students are such visual learners, they will also benefit from filling our walls with posters displaying the information they learn as we study each topic.

Reading and writing go hand in hand and each student will complete a weekly journal illustrating and writing all they have learned.
