Reeds for Students

Help me give my students reeds at no cost, so that money doesn't hold them back from their full potential in band class.

My Students

I teach both middle school and high school band, students. My students are very musical, creative, and excited to learn. Every student in the band here has a love for music and expression. They are constantly rising to the occasion. Whenever they are faced with difficulty, they always work hard to overcome the obstacle. They bring energy to every class, football game, and event. They are welcoming, loving, and kind despite the recent transitions between 4 different teachers.

The students here care so much about one another that even after my first-week teaching, students were offering to buy each other school materials.

It's clear that the students here love each other very much and want everyone to pursue their love of learning. With your help, we can make sure we have the basic supplies needed to run full functioning band classes without compromising our learning opportunities and potential.

It is important to note that the Primary School, Elementary School, and Middle School feeders are Title 1 schools. The high school used to be Title 1, but is not currently considered Title 1 this school year.

My Project

Many of my students play on broken, chipped, cracked, and some even dare to play on moldy reeds. It breaks my heart to see so many students playing an instrument with defective reeds. Reeds are essential in making sounds on a clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone. Students that play on bad reeds tend to get squeaks, honks, or no sound at all. These same students also tend to blame themselves for the terrible noises they make without realizing it is their instrument or reed, which leads to lower self-confidence and associating their instruments with negativity and unfulfillment. Many of our students struggle to afford reeds, so I have fundraised to help give some reeds to students in need, but this is not enough. Unfortunately, reeds go by quickly and the cost for each reed adds up.

I work in a low-income community where every dollar counts.

Many of my students work part-time jobs starting at a young age. Those that work part-time jobs eventually come up with the money for a new reed every now and then, but both the student and I know that one reed is not enough.

Please help me give reeds to students at no cost. This will help build confidence in our young students, as well as bring joy and peace of mind to receive an essential band item without the stress of coming up with the money.
