My Project
A typical day in my classroom is loud, energetic, and fast-paced. I teach two high school band courses, four middle school band courses, and yearbook. My students work extremely hard to come together and develop their musical skills, both as soloists and as part of an ensemble.
My school is a rural Title I school in Oklahoma.
I am currently living my dream of teaching band at my alma mater. The band is known for a long-standing tradition of excellence, and I intend to continue that tradition for many years to come.
Our band program continues to grow rapidly each year, and about half of the band members play woodwind instruments. These instruments require reeds, which we try to provide for the students at no cost. Reeds can cost around $30 a box. Reeds wear down over time, and the occasional accident causes them to chip and break. We are currently running very low on our school supply of reeds. The reeds we are requesting will help my students sound their absolute best every day during rehearsal and for every performance.
My students and I are constantly raising money for the many costs associated with a growing band program. This would take a huge burden off of our shoulders and would allow my students to worry about one less cost. Furthermore, if my students have access to better materials, then they will sound better on their instruments. If they sound better on their instruments, they will have more fun and get more enjoyment out of being part of the band.
