Redwood Experience: Kindergarten Artists

My students need paint brushes, CONSTRUCTION PAPER, glue and other supplies to create artistic representations of their study of redwood trees.

My Students

This year my Kindergarten class has an amazing opportunity to make three visits to a redwood forest near our community. I plan to extend and deepen their appreciation and understanding of these amazing trees by creating a series of art pieces inspired by our trips.

My students attend a public charter school in California.

The mission of the school is to integrate high academic standards with both the arts and service learning. These children are eager to learn, explore and create. We are very fortunate to live in an area with a great diversity of settings, everything from redwood forests and sandy beaches to urban sprawl. Too often students at our school never fully explore or appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us.

My Project

Your donation will bring our forest visits alive in our classroom. Through art integration and writing my students will be learning about science, language arts and natural resource conservation. Students will also have opportunities to serve the forest we visit by weeding and planting native plants. The art we create after our visits will be used to spread the word about redwood forests and how every one of us can serve our community.

This project goes far beyond a few field trips and art projects.

Families will have opportunities to create art with their children and we will create a book that will be spread throughout our community. My hope is that these trips and the art they inspire will ensure that our children and their families will continue to explore the natural world around them for the rest of their lives.
