Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Last year, we've been focused on "the 3 R's": recycle, reduce, reuse. We've also learned a lot of plants and using things for art materials. We'd like to combine the two by making recycled paper from our paper scraps. This year, I want to make it a reality and start recycling!

I teach art in a school of moderate poverty.

I have 971 wonderful students who come from all walks of life, but many come from high poverty homes. Despite the fact that some of them have difficult home lives and limited resources, my students have a love for learning! They come into my room every morning with smiles on their faces, ready to learn. They are always excited to create art and use their imagination. Because we are located in a low-income area, the students come in with just the basic supplies. We make due with what we have, and we often have to depend on community business support, grants, and often our own money to help engage and inspire our students. I try to do everything I can to provide experiences that my students would usually not be able to have. It is my goal to help these students become well-rounded children who have a love of learning that allow them to succeed in life and school, despite their poverty.

My Project

My students need 3 blenders to make paper pulp to recycle old paper. We will use recycled paper from our art scraps and also from home to create paper that we can use in the classroom in place of a new piece of paper. We would also create homemade paper from smaller pieces of recycled paper. With recycling our paper, we can create new works of art! It will take everything they have learned and make our recycled paper it much more personal to them. Not only will they know why recycling is important, but they will be able to see the benefits of it firsthand. They will be able to put everything they have learned to action. Every time they use their recycled paper, they will be able to share what they have learned. They will never forget what they learned about recycling and plants

Everyday in school we use something that is made from trees, paper.

Since paper is so important to us and because we use so much of it, we need to make sure we don’t waste it. Fortunately, we can save trees by using less paper and by recycling paper. I would like to use the scraps from students art projects and paper around the school to do this.
