My Students
My middle school library is a happening place. Every hour we have students stopping by to get books, work on projects, or just say hello. Many of these students are readers. Some are not yet. My goal is to reach out and give all students a great reading experience.
We have just over 500 of the best seventh and eighth grade students here at our middle school.
The first word that comes to mind when describing our school is "community." Our staff works hard to make each and every student feel like they are a part of something bigger. It's so wonderful to see students get excited about the shared experiences they get here at school.
Some of our students are avid readers, others not so much. Still, I try to make the library a place where everyone wants to be. I teach my students that, even if they don't love reading, we can find them a book they'll enjoy!
My Project
This school year I started a new program called "Red Wings Read!" I picked one book to be our featured book for the year. I've created activities and events that tie in to that book throughout the year. It's been wonderful because it gives students and staff at least one book they can all talk about. EVERYONE at school is involved. Parents are even reading it! Next year I'd like to use the title Wonder. This is a wonderful book that we can tie in with our anti-bullying initiative. The books purchased through our DonorsChoose.org project would be distributed to teacher classrooms. This way each teacher can read it and then pass it along to our students. The library can only buy so many copies of the book (due to state funding rules) so it would be wonderful to get more copies in the hands of students. I would create activities which would run through the library and classrooms for students to participate in. I'd also work with out Project Unify group.
This project will make a difference in multiple ways.
First, it will foster a love of reading and books for all of our students. Red Wings Read! builds excitement for the chosen book among the students and staff. It will provide a universal experience for staff and students to engage with Wonder. Also, since this particular book deals with choosing kindness, this project will support out anti-bullying initiative and help build empathy.
