My class is based off of the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals, whose mission is to help eradicate global issues such as poverty, social injustices, and climate change. By helping to come up with ideas to help eradicate these issues will allow us to provide a better world for future generations to come. My classes are very special because they consist of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who are currently learning various world languages. In this global studies class, our scholars have evaluated the effectiveness of various strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs such as education, health, social protection, job opportunities, recycling, equal and affordable housing, climate change and environmental protection.
With Mecklenburg County having such a high amount of waste being sent to landfills, we wanted to fix this problem right here in our school.
We have developed a school wide recycling program to promote awareness about the importance of recycling and how it helps with responsible consumption and production. By implementing this school wide program, we are bringing the Service Stars mission to life in our school by having our global studies students create projects, ideas, campaigns, and fundraisers to get more students to take action. The resources provided will provide the necessary essentials to pick up recycling around the school and dispose of it properly. While learning about what items are recyclable, this first step will help our students be more conscious of the items they throw away daily and decrease the amount of waste in our school and hopefully in their homes. Our goal is to have more students recycling around the school and more families recycling in their communities.
