Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are Vietnamese and Hispanic kids from four through fifth grade. They are economically disadvantaged.
We have a robotics club in our school and I’m their coach.
We won first prize on Ecobot last year, so we are excited to expand the experience to more kids who can benefit from the club.
We focus on learning English through STEM activities as our students are all English Language Learners and have different first languages. The students are mostly Gifted and Talented and have no other means to have STEM extracurricular activities.
My Project
Our Robotics Club just found thousands of LEGO parts in a storage within the school and we are very excited. Unfortunately, those parts belong to the old NXT LEGO kits that nobody is using anymore to participate in robotics contests. But if we get the new "brains" from the EV3 kits, we can make our own EV3 kits by putting together the parts for a fraction of the price. We would be able to build a robot for each brain we can get as the other parts will work with the new brain.
Our club just expanded from 7 to 15 kids and, if we get more EV3 Brains we can expand it further.
We had more than 60 applications this year but we cannot accept more members if we don't have the resources.
Help us get more kids involved in STEM projects and put those old parts into good use!
