My Students
Protecting the Earth through recycling is a valuable concept. This project focuses on composting as a tool to recycling and getting the students actively involved in taking care of our planet.
The students in my class are an amazing group of kids that come from low-income households (75% are receiving free or reduced lunches) and most are struggling to meet our grade-level expectations.
I can see the love of learning in their eyes and it shows in their work. I have a classroom full of kids that for the most part give a great effort to succeed, but I feel could do so much more if resources were available or at least reliable resources were available!
My Project
Although recycling isn't part of our first grade curriculum, I still think it is an important skill to cover. Teaching students ways to continue to care and protect our Earth is one lesson that can have a forever impact for several generations. This project will focus on composting, using worms to decompose materials to create a nutrient rich soil.
The materials in this project will lend themselves to allowing students to see the processes of composting. The worm compost bin allows the students to see composting, first hand. We will use the DVD and books as resources to fuel their learning on composting. With these materials the students will get a hands-on experience while working with the compost bins and worms.
Help me make an impact that will hopefully have a positive difference on our Earth for many years.
This project will show students how one person truly can make a difference in the world.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
