This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching through practice is the best way to learn. We currently do not have organized recycling areas throughout the school. Since we cannot afford recycling bins for each classroom, we will do it in the hallway and create activities where students can learn how and what to recycle.
My students are inner city high school students of New York state.
They are recent immigrants from Latin American countries. All of our students come from low-income families. They are very friendly and eager to learn but are not aware of the world outside of their community. We need to teach them about the better things in life and how to take care of the beautiful world we live in.
My Project
We currently have 2 recycling stations that are not very obvious and are not being used properly. We would like to eventually have 4 new recycling stations in each corner of the school. However, I can only currently "afford" two of the bins I am requesting since these recycling bins seem to be extremely expensive. I will be creating an activity for the entire school to do with students in their advisory classes so that they can become familiar with the containers and see their values. This will be the beginning of a recycling initiative and possibly an Environmental Club that will host drives in the future.
This project is important because our students need to learn these habits while they are young and so they can pass this information down to their future children.
If they do not see the value in recycling then they will not do it and our world will continue to spiral out of control due to global warming. One person does make a difference and we all need to take action.
